Shelby #1581 began life as a Hertz Rent-A-Racer, the iconic name give to the Hertz “Rent a Shelby Super Car” promotion in 1966. It was sold to a local Hertz Rent-A-Car agency near Baltimore, Maryland where it remained in service from April of 1966 to August of 1967. Hertz auto rental clients who were part of the Hertz Sports Car Club were eligible to rent and drive these legendary muscle cars. Then in August of 1967 a New Mexico man bought one of the Hertz rental cars, a black 1966 Shelby GT350H, and asked his local Ford dealer to install the Paxton Supercharger available through the Shelby catalog at that time. That brought the horsepower output to 380+ on a 289 V8 car. In 2009, the current owner brought it to New England where it underwent an “over-the-top” detailed restoration. But it kept the Hertz standard Magnum 500 chromed wheels. They say the under-carriage is as finely detailed as the top.
