Pierce Arrow held to its guns and kept using large displacement T-head 6-cylinder engines while other manufacturers started to trend 8-cylinder and Twin Sixes. The engine they went with, the big horsepower 6-cylinder engine, was known for incredible power and smooth, near silent, operation.

See an engineering marvel at work in the engine bay of the 1919 Pierce Arrow Roadster for sale by Legendary Motorcar Company. The 48 horsepower, 525 ci T-head twin plug, 24 valve beast of a machine runs with exposed valve springs and a shaft-driven oiling system. A dash-mounted hand pump pressurizes the fuel system manually.
