Many users said that picking just one was a challenge, though sided with their first muscle car love, the Chevrolet Chevelle SS. Among all of the Chevelles produced from 1964 to 1977, poll participants called out the 1969 model equipped with a 396 ci engine as being the crème de la crème of one of the greatest muscle cars of all time. In the end, the Chevelle SS took off with 11.36% of the votes.
Following up the Chevelle SS with 9.71% of the votes is the Pontiac GTO. Said by many to be the “first muscle car,” Russell Gee and Bill Collins developed the GTO to fall through loopholes in GM’s 1963 ban on development of vehicles for auto racing. Comments on the poll favored the 1967 model, which featured a new Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor, new cylinder head designs and a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic TH-400 transmission.
Voters ranked the Dodge Charger R/T in third place, with 9.50% of the votes. The Dodge Charger has been a mainstay with muscle car enthusiasts since the beginning, and was made even more popular by the T.V. show, Dukes of Hazard. Redesigned for the 1968 model-year, and equipped with a 426 Hemi engine only available to R/T models, it’s easy to see how this one grabbed a place in the top three!
