1968 Shelby GT500 KR

Rare Code W Meadowlark Yellow KR Found in Belgium

Rich Barnes of The Mustang Ranch in Littleton, Colorado tells the story of a lifetime in an article he write for The Shelby American magazine. You’ll find a link to this article in the ad he placed for his rare Meadowlark Yellow 1968 Shelby GT500 KR which he is offering for sale. While the Shelby itself is rare, the story behind how Barnes found the car ads an important degree of provenance to the sale.

It seems that Barnes was contacted by an Australian who had four Shelby GTs, one R code 1969 Mach 1 and a Pantera in a collection in Belgium. Although skeptical of what he would find he hopped a plane to Europe to find the motherload of all “barn finds.” His skepticism was replaced by incredible exhilaration when the door of an old Belgian warehouse was opened and there stood all six vehicles under car covers. The article describes the challenges he went through to get these cars back to the U.S. But suffice to say that these cars today are all in his collection. This 1968 Shelby GT500 will be the first to be offered for sale.

In last week’s edition of the Cars On Line.com newsletter we introduced you to The Mustang Ranch.┬áBarnes’ facility is pretty interesting. But for all the inventory he has there, these six cars that came from Belgium are the frosting on the cake.

The Shelby KR was rotisserie restored in 2005. Barnes says that the motor, transmission and rear end are numbers matching to the car. He believes it to be all numbers matching, according to his ad copy. He also says it has all original sheet metal and fiberglass with no metal body panel replacement what so ever. This is one of the Ford special Yellow paint #WT6066. There were 129 KR’S painted this color and are highly sought after. He thinks the car has about 2,000 miles on the restoration.

Barnes has put together an incredibly detailed video of his Shelby. You won’t need a pre-purchase inspection after watching it. We figure it to be a nice high No. 3 condition car that could easily be a No. 2 with proper detailing.

This car has been SOLD.
