1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV

1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV

Trying to find a  1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV like this one is like trying to find the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. They are so rare they may be as elusive as finding frog hair. So how did Arizona Classics, the home of rare muscle cars, in Scottsdale, Arizona, find not just one but two Ram Air IV Goats to offer for sale? Bill Paweski, of Arizona Classics, felt he was really lucky to have found the 1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV that was campaigned by Nib Johnston, a well-known Pontiac dealer in Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada. It is significant since it was one of only 804 RA IV cars produced by Pontiac that year. Of those only 140 RA IV hardtops were produced in 1970 with the Heavy Duty M40 Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Even more rare, it was special ordered in Starlight black with blue slate interior, and is said to have just 4,250 actual miles. It was a phenomenal find. Yet this was not the end of the story.

This car has been SOLD.

The Ram Air IV option was the mother of all engine options for Pontiac. Available on the GTO, it was most often ordered with the Judge package. To combat the monster Hemi motors from Mopar, Pontiac had this special engine package called the Ram Air IV which raised 400 ci engine performance to 370 horsepower. The Ram Air IV was introduced in 1969 and was available also for the 1970 production year.  RA IV meant new cylinder heads, rockers and radical camshaft with an aluminum intake manifold that had a large “IV’ embedded on it.

When Bill purchased the car, the son of Nib Johnston contacted him to give him a whole folder full of documentation on the car. He mentioned that his father also had campaigned a twin to this car the year before, in 1969. Not more than two months later Paweski was tracking down a black 1969 GTO Ram Air IV. When he caught the seller on the phone he said, “I just want to ask you one thing …” Before Paweski could even ask the question, the Canadian seller said, “Yeh, it’s Nib Johnston’s car.” Wow! Talk about synchronicity. Johnston had also campaigned this 1969 GTO for one year in the NHRA F/SA Class. It recorded its best ET of 12.53 at Van Isle Dragway on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Both cars have now undergone full rotisserie restorations and are wonderful investment grade specimens. For a Pontiac collector, to find a Ram Air IV car, a real one with documentation like these, is like winning he lottery.
