Collector Car Values Fall 4 Percent …
Cars On Line has just come out with its Collector Car Values Market Trends report for the 3rd Quarter of 2014. Once again collector car values have dropped on most cars in the collector car market since the end of last year. Prices on desriable collector cars such as Mustang Mach 1 428 R Code cars, Camaros and Chevelles have been trending slighly lower. Corvettes and Mopars were up slightly in the last three months compared to prices at the end of last year. The prices in our Collector Car Values Market Trends report are shown here below. These numbers show that prices are down by 4 percent when compared to prices at the end of 2013.
Below is Cars On Line’s “hot list” of classic cars which change hands frequently in today’s collector car market. We follow these cars to get a sense of what is happening in the larger collector car realm. This sample group is representative of the vast majority of cars changing hands today. Notice that we give you the average prices these cars have sold for for various years, i.e. 2008 before the economic recession; 2013 the most recent full year of sales; and 2014.

Every quarter Cars On Line.com sticks a thermometer into the collector car hobby to measure its temperature. Results from this most recent quarter do show improvement however. Those who follow our reports may remember that in July of 2014 prices had dropped to 8.3 percent below last year’s numbers. So these prices, although they are below last year’s totals are up over 4 percent from where they were earlier in the year.
We always hear about the high profile classic cars, such as classic Ferraris, which are selling at what seem to be ever escalating prices at high profile auctions on TV. But the larger collector car market itself is tailing off at this point, trending slightly downward. The market is definitely experiencing some indigestion in 2014.
The biggest loser up until July had been the 1967 Shelby GT500. Arguably one of the top ten most popular cars among internet buyers, recent sales numbers on No. 2 condition GT500’s had been trending downward until this past quarter. (See the chart below.) Mustangs in general are showing better prices recently as 1969 and 1970 Boss 302 Mustangs are showing greater interest from collector car buyers this quarter. The biggest winner in this past quarter is the 1957 Ford Thunderbird which increased in value by 25 percent.
The numbers shown here in the Collector Car Values Market Trends report came from high-profile auctions, well-known valuation guides and private sales with known results.
