1965 Dodge A990 Super Stock Coronet

Few cars struck fear in the hearts of Ford and Chevy racers as did the 1965 Dodge A990 Super Stock Coronet. And if it came from Mr Norm’s Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago if was nearly unbeatable at the track. When you bought a car from Mr Norm’s you could dyno tune it once a week for free. That made those cars pretty tricky to beat if you did not have access to a dynamometer (who did anyway?)

Dodge and Plymouth came up with a weapon that gave Ford and Chevy owners many a sleepless night as Mopars dominated the drag strip with their A990 cars. This 1965 Dodge A990 Super Stock is one of only 101 such Dodge factory lightweight cars built. They say it was delivered at Mr Norm’s Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago. A Mr Norm1965 A990 Race hemi enginedelivered car ads over $10,000 to the value on any Mopar. But with this 1965 Dodge Coronet A990 the value is inestimable. It is one of the top Mopar muscle cars of all time.

This is a true museum quality, factory built lightweight race car whose sole purpose in life was to win in NHRA Super Stock Drag Racing. In fact, they were specially constructed with lightweight sheetmetal that would vibrate from the power of the Race Hemi engine. They also had lightweight glass, came radio and heater delete, rear battery, no visors, no armrests, one wiper and usually had seats from a Dodge van.

Yes it came with a Hemi, but it was the legendary A990 Race Hemi, equipped with aluminum heads, magnesium cross ram intake and a pair of Holley Carburetors topped with velocity stacks that mated to the hood scoop. From a historical perspective it is amazing to us today that Dodge purpose built this car for the strip.

This is one of very few surviving ’65 A990’s fully restored to as close to factory original as practical. Darrell Davis has confirmed the following for this car:

-The VIN and SO Number Match based upon the VIN Tag, Fender Tag and radiator Support stamping and is therefore a real A-990.

-The car was ordered by and delivered to Grand Spaulding Dodge.

-The car has the third VIN assigned.

-The car was fourth or fifth car built.

It looks just like the one my Dad had when I was 2-3 years old. He sold the car n far as I knew it spent its days on a show room floor indoors. I wish I had that car it would be an awesome dedication to my memories of my Dad. His name was William LeRoy Dodd and I’ll forever miss him.
