Ford’s amazing retractable hardtops were produced by Ford Motor Company from 1957 through 1959. One might say that this 1959 Ford Galaxie Skyliner Retractable is the most rare of the three-year production run.
If there was ever a technology that was way ahead of its time it was the retractable hardtop. People would watch in wonder to see that magical hardtop disappear into the trunk, but they did not line up to buy them. In 1959 only the Ford Fairlane 500 had Galaxie badging to introduce the Galaxie to the new full size production lineup. ’59 was the last year of Skyliner production and had the lowest number of units produced.
