December 2015 New Car Sales

Automakers had reason to celebrate as 2015 proved to be the best year ever for the American auto industry. A record 17.4 million cars and trucks rolled off dealership lots during 2015, putting yearly sales up 5.8 percent from 2014 and topping the previous sales record set in 2000. The numbers have been released by Their data center provides the most trusted numbers for new car sales.

December-New-Car-Sales-WardDecember proved to be one of the best months of the year, with automakers selling 1.6 million vehicles, a 9 percent improvement over the previous year. General Motors, the nation’s largest automaker, reported its total sales climbed 5.7 percent to 290,230 from 274,483 a year ago. Meanwhile Ford, the second largest U.S. automaker, reported its sales rose 8 percent to 231,659 vehicles, the group’s best U.S. December sales results since 2005. In a press release, the company noted Ford remained America’s best-selling vehicle brand for the sixth straight year. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) extended its streak of year-over-year sales gains to 69 consecutive months in December. The auto manufacturer said its U.S. sales increased 12.8 percent to 215,691 cars and trucks, the group’s best December sales ever.

The big Japanese automakers posted gains for the month of December as well. Toyota, the largest Japanese car manufacturer, said it sold 238,350 cars and trucks last month, a 10.8 percent increase from the same month in 2014. Meanwhile, Honda’s overall sales jumped 9.9 percent from December 2014 results.

According to the Los Angeles Times, analysts expect automakers to deliver 18 million vehicles in 2016.
