Here’s more from the seller:
“Duesenberg, one of the most incredible automobiles ever built. Favored by Hollywood elite and captains of industry, these automobiles are the embodiment of style, class and performance.
J-381 began life in 1929 as a long wheelbase chassis at the Indianapolis Duesenberg factory and was then shipped to the New York factory branch showroom and entered into inventory.
The rolling chassis was purchased by Nanaline Duke, widow of American Tobacco Company founder J.B. Duke, and was noted for a spectacular gem collection.
Mrs. Duke shipped the chassis to Murphy of Pasadena to receive this magnificent Town Car coachwork. The Walter M. Murphy Company would build a total of four Town Car bodies for Duesenberg, the most of any single coachbuilder.
Duke retained J-381 for only a short period before selling it off, as was common with most high end cars of the era. Several owners later, Judge Pat Ferchill acquired the car for his collection in 1958 and it then passed from his estate in unrestored, factory original condition. In 1985 Bill and Aniece Lassiter purchases the car and commissioned a total frame off Concours quality restoration.
It is believed that this is one of only 2 examples to survive. Its stately presence is unmatched.
The Engine, Chassis and Body are ALL original to this car.
A complete mechanical service has just been completed by the marque specialist Brian Joseph. The result of this is a fantastic running and driving example that performs as a Duesenberg should with strong acceleration, sure braking and precise steering.
Although the restoration was completed many years ago, the car presents beautifully. The paint combination is stunning, it shines and gleams as does the chrome. Clearly, this car demonstrates how a very well cared for classic can pass the years with only minor evidence of the time passed.”
