Magazine ad TV advertisements back in the day said the 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardtop was “a Pony with horsepower …” Some declared this high performance Mopar was a “Pony with a mean streak.” You did not want to meet one on the street.

For Mopar collectors it just doesn’t get any better than this. A 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardtop was listed for sale by a private collector from Rochester, Minnesota. (Follow this link to see the price and more photos.) He indicates that it is a heavily documented 1970 Dodge  Challenger Hemi R/T hardtop with a 426/425 hp Hemi V8 engine, original FE5 “Bright Red” car in color, original black interior, Rallye dash, and steel wheels with Poverty hubcaps. Follow the link to the ad page and you will note that the price on this very rare Mopar is well below what a classic car dealer might ask.  And well below what you see them going for at big national auctions. Maybe it should be our DEAL of the DAY this week?

The seller says it has undergone a professional restoration by Legendary Motorcar Company in 2006/2007,  and used very sparingly since the redo. He notes “very nice paint and interior, nice trim, very solid car that runs and drives good. Not a concours perfect 1,000-point trailer queen.” Click through to the ad page where you will see photos of the undercarriage. That really tells the whole story on this car. Real nice.

The 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardstop was featured in the 2007 Dream Car Garage calendar (copy goes with car). You will note that the seller has included photos of the original body numbers (cowl and radiator support) and fender tag and VIN number.  It has an original “mint condition” Chrysler Broadcast sheet, original door VIN decal and a decode by Mopar historian Galen Govier. It also comes with the owners manual.

The Chrysler Broadcast sheet verifies that serial number 155925 is a JS23ROB. (See photos of the Broadcast sheet and the decode by Galen Govier on this 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardtop.) The fender tag shows it came with an original E74 426 4-barrel, 425 horsepower Hemi V8 motor. The fender tag also shows it to be a JS23 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 2-Door Hardtop, which was produced as an ROB (R= 426 Hemi V8, 0= 1970 model year, B=produced at the Hamtramck, Michigan assembly plant.

This 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardtop is so heavily documented that there is no doubt about its authenticity. It is a very rare car to start with … then factor in the great color combo and documentation. It has it all. You know you are buying an investment collector car which will hold its value.  “It’s better than any 401k out there,” says the seller.  “And you can enjoy it instead of looking at a piece of paper (stock certificate.)”

How rare is a 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardtop? According to Galen Govier, a well known Mopar historian, there were only 287 produced in 1970. Of those, 150 were automatics. This one is a D32 code 727 Torqueflite automatic.
Govier says that there are only 138 Hemi Challenger R/T hardtops in his Chrysler Registry. The 1970 Dodge Challenger Hemi R/T hardtops were exclusively produced at the Hamtramck, Michigan assembly plant.

Chrysler’s  1970 Dodge Challenger model was an eye-grabber with a deeply recessed grill set back behind the dual headlamps. The rear lights spread the length of the valance.  The center section of the rear lights had large single reversing lamps with the name Dodge on it. The R/T came standard with the Sport Hood, a power bulge hood fitted with dual air intakes which were not connected directly to the air filter. Rallye instruments were standard on the R/T. It had a cluster containing four large equal sized pods with a 150 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, clock and the remaining pod containing four gauges for oil pressure, alternator, engine temperature and fuel.
The Challenger was Dodge’s entry into the Mustang-created “Pony Car” segment of the muscle car market back in the day. Introduced for the 1970 model year, it was one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly smaller Plymouth Barracuda/Cuda.
