Holman-Moody Built 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL R Code

1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL R Code

A Holman-Moody built 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL R Code is a car of which legends are made. Indeed, just to find a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL with the revered R Code 427 motor is rare enough by itself. Then see a bracket plate that says Holman-Moody on it and you have collectors crowding around it like flies on a light bulb. This rare find appeared on the Cars On Line website this week when Streetside Classics listed it out of their Charlotte, North Carolina showroom.

They note that if you were to pull up to a stop light in Charlotte in 1964 in this luxury sized Ford 2-Door it might not have tipped off anyone as to what you had there. But if they were to give you the go sign you would leave them staring at your dual exhaust all the way down the street. In other words, this was the ultimate sleeper in street clothes. They say there is evidence that this one spent some time at the track too. Ford made this competition coupe only one year, and in 1964 it was the most aerodynamic offering out of Detroit with its fastback type top.

Streetside Classics tells us that the vinyl top is very rare and seems to be original. (Be sure to read their description on their ad page.) In fact, they were told this is the only one the head of the R Code Galaxie Registry has ever seen. The 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL was Ford’s top-of-the-line with great brightwork on places like the chrome strip that ran the full length of the car, surrounding the jet-inspired taillights, and on the front grille with horizontal chrome lines.

As you slip behind the wheel of this inspirational 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL R Code you’ll notice the Sun Pro tach. A premium set of gauges is needed to make sure you keep the monster engine from blowing up.

Under the hood is an R Code 427 with big block power and tuned by Holman-Moody. Streetside Classics believes it to be the original motor. Only a handful of these cars came with the special transistorized ignition, but this is one of them. Streetside assures us this car can still tear up some asphalt because it has undergone a complete rebuild at KT Engineering in March of 2016. Even the correct dual Holley carbs were redone. “Just take a look at the dyno sheet that proves 480 horsepower at the rear wheels,” they point out. “There’s a ferocious bark out of the X-pipe dual exhaust, and you get complete control over the rumble and the fury of this total package thanks to the date-correct toploader 4-speed manual transmission.” The NASCAR package detail is correct right down to the Detroit Locker rear end. Those wheel covers were specific to the R Code cars.

Click over to the ad on this 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL R Code and you’ll see photos of the owner’s manual, dyno sheet and build receipts. You can also see the Holman-Moody plates and the R code in the door plate VIN and one the fender. Streetside even says the 33,981 miles on the odometer is actual.

That makes this R Code Galaxie a legend on wheels.
