This Lemans blue 1969 Yenko Chevelle SC 427 is one of only 99 COPO’s converted at Yenko Chevrolet. Back in the day a racer could buy a track ready muscle car right out of the box at Don Yenko’s Chevrolet dealership in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Yenko Chevrolet would convert a special ordered COPO 427 Chevelle with their Super Car (SC) package. This is one of only 99 such Chevelle SC 427 cars produced there. So there were actually fewer Yenko Chevelles produced than Yenko Camaros or Yenko Novas. For that and many other reasons, Chevrolet muscle car authority Jerry MacNeish called this car “one of the rarest 1969 Chevelles ever produced.”
The 1969 Yenko Chevelle SC 427 you see here was a COPO Chevelle, originally invoiced by Yenko Chevrolet on March 31, 1969 to a Chevy muscle car buyer from Freedom, Pennsylvania. The dealer purchase order is dated March 26, 1969. The order form indicated it would come with a close ratio 4-speed transmission, power brakes, power steering and front disc brakes. There were only 71 Yenko Chevelle 4-speeds produced. The purchase price at the time was $4,342. They say this car still has its original drivetrain today. It is now available for sale from a private collection. (Follow this link to see the ad posted on the Cars On Line website.) The broker promises it with owner history and more documentation than you usually find with these historic cars. MacNeish called it a fully restored example. It was judged at 993 points out of 1,000.
According to the Yenko Registry only 35 of the 99 Yenko Chevelles are accounted for today. The Yenko Chevelle was only produced in 1969. These cars had a 427 cubic-inch engine actually producing 450 horsepower and were based on the standard Malibu. They included a high performance camshaft, a four-barrel Holley carburetor and a choice of a Muncie four-speed or Turbo Hydromatic transmission. A heavy-duty suspension, power disc brakes and a blacked-out grille were also part of the Yenko Super Car package.
Every 1969 Yenko Chevelle SC 427 still in existence today is a highly valued classic muscle car. Don Yenko might have fudged the horsepower numbers a bit (listing them as 425 hp) to fool the insurance companies, but they were mostly meant for the dragstrip anyway. They were monster performers at the track. All the Yenko editions came with a special interior and Yenko SC decal kit.
Documentation on this 1969 Yenko Chevelle SC 427 includes the Pro-tec-to plate, Yenko dealer invoice, Chevrolet dealer invoice, Camaro Hi-Performance Certificate of Authenticity signed by Jerry MacNeish, an inspection letter signed by Jerry MacNeish, and the Chevrolet Warranty Plan.
